Connected Apps vs. External Client Apps: What You Need to Know

Key Changes in Summer '25 Release

The traditional "Connected Apps" section in Setup has been renamed to "External Client Apps" under the App Manager in Setup.

If you need the classic Connected Apps view, follow these steps:

Setup → Quick Find → "External Client App" → Settings → Enable "Allow creation of connected apps"

Setting	Description
Allow access to External Client App consumer secrets via Metadata API	Allows viewing of consumer secrets in Metadata API responses
Allow access to External Client App consumer secrets via REST API	Allows access to consumer secrets through OAuth credentials in REST API
Allow creation of connected apps	Enables the classic Connected Apps interface (legacy option)

App Manager — Setup → Apps → App Manager: shows every connected app and external client app with its type in the "App Type" column.
External Client App Settings — Setup → Apps → External Client Apps → Settings: this is where the "Allow creation of connected apps" toggle lives.
Connected Apps OAuth Usage — Setup → Connected Apps OAuth Usage: audit which apps are actually in use before deciding what to migrate.
